ARRAYAN PATH aus Zypern sind in der Rock Garage alte Bekannte. Nach 25 Jahren Bandgeschichte haben die Epic-Power-Metaller nun ihr erstes echtes Konzeptalbum veröffentlicht, das in unserer Review-Abteilung absolut zurecht die Höchstwertung erhielt. Höchste Zeit, nicht immer nur über ARRAYAN PATH zu sprechen, sondern auch mal mit ihnen – genauer gesagt, mit ihrem Sänger und Bandleader Nicholas!
Jannis: Hey Nicholas! Zuerst einmal: Vielen Dank, dass Du Dir die Zeit für ein Interview mit uns nimmst. Nachdem ich jetzt schon vier Eurer Alben rezensieren durfte, freue ich mich, auch einmal mit einem der Verantwortlichen persönlich zu sprechen. Also, Glückwunsch, „Thus Always To Tyrants“ ist draußen, die Reaktionen von Fans und Presse kommen rein. Zufrieden damit?
Nicholas: Hey! Ja, absolut, die Reviews waren super bislang! Möglicherweise die besten, die wir je für ein Album bekommen haben.
Jannis: Ach edel, dann bin ich nicht alleine mit meiner Meinung. Von den vier neusten Veröffentlichungen von Euch ist „Thus Always To Tyrants“ diejenige, der ich einfach die Höchstwertung geben musste. Sagen wir, ich liege damit richtig: Wie kommt’s? Gab es irgendwelche Neuerungen im Schaffensprozess?
Nicholas: Um ganz ehrlich zu sein: Wir haben nicht bewusst versucht, etwas anders zu machen. Wir haben einfach gemacht, was wir immer machen und versucht, die bestmöglichen Songs zu schreiben. Dabei sei aber gesagt, obwohl ich all unsere Alben liebe, wird das hier von den meisten als eins unserer besten wahrgenommen.
Jannis: Vielleicht hat auch sein Konzept dazu beigetragen. „Thus Always To Tyrants“ wird beworben als ARRAYAN PATHs erstes echtes Konzeptalbum. Was brachte Euch dazu?
Nicholas: Das ist etwas, was ich schon seit längerer Zeit mal machen wollte – ein Album zu schreiben, dessen Handlung in chronologischer Abfolge stattfindet. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Alben wie KING DIAMONDs „Conspiracy“ und „Them“ und wollte sowas einfach mal selbst machen. Und ein Buch schreiben konnte ich nicht, dann eben mit Musik! Ausgewählt haben wir die Geschichte von König Evagoras. Das ist eine Geschichte aus der Vergangenheit meines Landes. Darüber haben wir noch nie etwas geschrieben, wurde also echt Zeit!
Jannis: Wie eine andere Rezension zu Eurem neuen Album schrieb: „Das ist Progressive-offener Power Metal für eingefleischte Kenner und Nerds und jeder mit einem IQ unter 140 kann jetzt den Raum verlassen.“ Und während ich nicht weiß, ob ich dem wirklich zustimme, weil ich das Album sehr mag, aber sicherlich den Raum verlassen müsste, hat „Thus Always To Tyrants“ viele komplexere Bestandteile hinsichtlich Songwriting, musikalischer Details, Strukturen, und viele smarte Ideen, was Sounddesign und Arrangements angeht. Ist auf jeden Fall nicht das normale „Billige Emotionen“-Power-Metal-Album. Kannst Du ein bisschen über den Songwriting-Prozess für die Platte erzählen, wer involviert war und wie der Prozess vonstatten ging?
Nicholas: Findest Du die Songs wirklich so komplex? Unsere Gesangsmelodien sind ziemlich eingängig, hin zu dem Punkt, wo die schmale Grenze zu den Standards von Metal fast überschritten wird. Ich würde sagen, BLIND GUARDIAN sind für mich komplex. Aber ich verstehe, was Du meinst. Wir haben in jeden Song ein paar überraschende Parts eingebaut, weil, wie Du sagtest, wir nicht wie die typische Power-Metal-Band klingen wollen. Was das Songwriting angeht: Normal kommen die Gesangsmelodien zuerst. Dann geht es in Zusammenarbeit daran, die Arrangements auszuarbeiten und die Strukturen zu formen. Auf die Weise haben wir das von Anfang an gemacht, und so läuft es für alle am besten.
Jannis (nun all seine bisherigen Ansichten zu Komplexität in Musik überdenkend): Zum Thema „überraschende Parts“: Auf der einen Seite fühlt sich Eure Musik für mich eher dramatisch und ernst an. Aber fast jedes Album, das ich bislang von Euch gehört habe, bringt mich an ein paar Stellen doch zum lachen, wenn zum Beispiel ein majestätischer, Orchester-reicher Part plötzlich von einem simplen, asozial-trockenen Riff abgelöst wird, das komplett aus dem Nichts kommt. Ist Humor eine Sache bei Eurem Songwriting oder liegt das nur an meinem unter-140-IQ?
Nicholas: Haha! Nun, wenn wir Dich unterhalten können, ist das doch eine gute Sache! Meinen Humor trifft es eher, irgendwelche generischen Power-Metal-Bands zu hören, die bereits verwendete Melodien stehlen und sie uns dann als ihre eigenen verkaufen.
Jannis: Eine eher unoriginelle Frage an dieser Stelle, aber angesichts Eures individuellen Stils doch interessant: Was würdest Du als die musikalischen Einflüsse von ARRAYAN PATH bezeichnen? Scheinen mir nicht METALLICA/MOTÖRHEAD zu sein.
Nicholas: Wir holen uns unsere Einflüsse aus ganz verschiedenen Genres, aber unser größter ist IRON MAIDEN!
Jannis: Siehst Du denn die Chance, ARRAYAN PATH in Zukunft mal auf Tour zu sehen? Das war ja bislang meines Wissens immer ein ziemliches Privileg, bei gerade mal fünf auf Facebook gelisteten Konzerten in der Vergangenheit über sechs Jahre.
Nicholas: Vermutlich nicht, wir sind keine Tour-Band. Lieber mal ein paar Konzerte hier und da. Aber wir reflektieren immer unsere Optionen und entscheiden, ob es den Brassel wert ist. Aber insgesamt sind wir halt echt eher eine Studio-Band.
Jannis: Fast geschafft, letzte Frage: Gibt es irgendeinen Traum für ARRAYAN PATH, den Du wirklich gerne Realität werden sehen würdest?
Nicholas: Mein einziger Traum in der Hinsicht ist, weiterhin Inspiration für unsere zukünftigen Alben zu haben. Ich meine, klar werden nicht alle von ihnen auf dem gleichen Level sein, manchmal spielen ja auch andere Faktoren mit rein. Aber ich hoffe, dass ich in der Zukunft noch bessere Sachen schreiben kann. Und ich wünsche mir, dass unsere Musik weiterlebt und Gehör findet, selbst wenn die Band eines Tages nicht mehr ist.
Jannis: Noch einmal vielen herzlichen Dank für das Interview! Die letzten Worte gehören Dir – Zeit für schamlose Eigenwerbung, radikale politische Statements oder eine sehr kurze Abhandlung über Dein Lieblingstier!
Nicholas: Wir hoffen, Ihr habt unser Album genossen. Spielt es weiterhin, spielt es laut! Zerstört die verdammten Boxen! Ich mag Tiger, nebenbei.
ARRAYAN PATH from Cyprus are no strangers to the Rock Garage. After 25 years of band history the epic power metallers have now released their first real concept album and gained a perfect rating in our review, well deserved. No doubt: It’s about time to stop talking about ARRAYAN PATH for a bit and instead talk with them – more precisely to their singer and band leader Nicholas!
Jannis: Hey Nicholas! First of all, thank you so much for taking your time to do this interview with us. After reviewing four ARRAYAN PATH albums I’m really happy to talk to the mind behind the art (or one of the minds). So, congratulations, „Thus Always To Tyrants“ is out and reactions from fans and press are coming in. Do you like what they say?
Nicholas: Hi! Yes, reviews have been great so far! Probably the best ones we’ve had in our whole career.
Jannis: Okay nice, so I’m not alone with my opinion! Compared to the previous three releases, „Thus Always To Tyrants“ is the one that I really couldn’t help but give a perfect rating. Let’s assume my rating is correct and TATT is really the strongest of those four albums: How come? Was there anything different regarding the development?
Nicholas: To tell you the truth, we did not consciously try to make it different. We just did what we always do; try to write the best songs possible. That said, although I love all our albums, this one is perceived by most to be one of our best.
Jannis: Maybe also because of it’s concept. „Thus Always To Tyrants“ is being promoted as ARRAYAN PATH’s first real concept album. What made you take this step?
Nicholas: It is something I wanted to do for a while now. To compose an album that follows a chronological order. I am a big fan of albums like “Conspiracy” and “Them” and I wanted to do that as well. I couldn’t write a book, so I did it with music! We chose the story about King Evagoras. It is a story from the history of my country. We have never written anything about my country, so it was about time!
Jannis: As a fellow reviewer wrote about your album: „This is progressive-minded power metal for diehards, jocks and anyone with an IQ under 140 can leave the hall.“ And while I’m not completely on his side, as I for sure would have to leave the hall, „Thus Always To Tyrants“ has a lot of complex song structures, complex songwriting, a lot of sophisticated ideas and details regarding composition and sound design and can hardly be considered your average „cheap emotions“ Power Metal album. Can you tell me about the songwriting process for „Thus Always To Tyrants“? Who was involved and how did the composition evolve?
Nicholas: Do you really think they are so complex? Our vocal lines are quite catchy, to the point where it balances on a thin line for the standards of metal music. I mean, Blind Guardian for me is complex. However, I understand what you mean. We have added extra parts (surprises) in each song because, as you said, we don’t want to sound like a typical power metal band. As for the song-writing, we usually write voice melodies first. Then the 3 of us start arranging the songs and forming the structures. We have followed this method from the beginning, and it works better for everyone.
Jannis (now re-evaluating his understanding of complexity in music): About these surprise parts: While your music feels rather dramatic and serious to me, almost every album of yours I’ve listened to has me laughing at a few points, for example when a majestic, heavy-on-orchestra part suddenly breaks down into a dry and simple riff that hits you by surprise. Is humour a thing for you regarding the composition or is this just because of my sub-140 IQ?
Nicholas: Haha! Well, if we can entertain you that’s a good thing. I usually find different things funny, like hearing generic power metal bands, stealing already used melodies and pushing them to our face as their own. Oh well..
Jannis: A rather unoriginal question at this point, but one worth asking regarding your individual style: What are the musical influences of ARRAYAN PATH? Doesn’t seem to be the usual METALLICA/MOTÖRHEAD ones.
Nicholas: We draw influences from many genres, however, our biggest influence is Iron Maiden!
Jannis: Is there any chance for some kind of ARRAYAN PATH tour in the future? As far as I know, catching you live has always been a real privilege with five gigs listed on Facebook in the last six years.
Nicholas: Probably not, we’re not a touring band. We prefer a few concerts here and there. But we always evaluate our options and decide if it’s worth the trouble or not. In general though, we are more of a studio band.
Jannis: Almost done, last question: Is there any dream for ARRAYAN PATH that you would really wish to become reality one day?
Nicholas: My only dream is to keep having inspiration for our future albums. I mean, I know that not all our albums will be at the same level. Sometimes it’s other things as well. But I hope to be able to write even better stuff in the future. And I want our music to live on and be recognized, even after the band is no more.
